We as a board have decided to cancel the SoCAB Core Curriculum Town Hall due to the current climate on campus precipitated by the University’s decision to call the NYPD to enter campus and arrest peaceful protestors occupying the encampment on the East Butler Lawn. We feel that an event illuminating activism in the context of the Core Curriculum is needed, but it feels inappropriate given the University’s current suppression of activism related to pro-Palestine protests. Also, the community and organizations of students of color we hoped to draw on for our event have been inundated with efforts to support pro-Palestine protesters. The voices of students of color dedicated to racial justice are preoccupied with more pressing matters on campus, and we don’t want to take away from those efforts. We apologize if canceling the event has presented any inconveniences for you, and we hope that we can reach out next year to discuss putting on this event under different circumstances.
Warmly,
Students of Color Advisory Board, Multicultural Affairs
