Join us for a talk with speaker Gabriel Aidar, visiting scholar at ILAS and PhD candidate in economics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. This event is part of the Brazil Research Seminar Series. Taking into account the pull-push debate on the weight that external or internal factors have on the behavior of capital flows and country-risk premium of developing economies, the aim of this article is to assess empirically the extent by which the push factors, linked to global liquidity and interest rates, (compared to country-specific factors) have played a role in the changes in the risk premium of a set of countries of the periphery, in the period 1999-2019. Gabriel Aidar is a visiting scholar at ILAS-Columbia and a PhD candidate in Economics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Aidar obtained his Master's degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and his BA degree from the University of São Paulo. He has worked as economic advisor to the Chief of Staff of the Brazilian Presidency dealing with fiscal policy and foreign trade. He is now on an authorized leave for the conclusion of his PhD thesis from the Brazilian Development Bank, where he has worked at the International Division and at the SMEs Division. His research focuses on the economics of the public sector and the impacts of international financial shocks on the vulnerability of developing economies. Our seminar series is held at Columbia, in the International Affairs Building, 420 West 118th Street, Room 802. We will begin each session at 1:00 pm.
