Italian Academy, 1161 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10027 The Library

In 1943 in Japan, seven-year-old Dacia Maraini was sent to a concentration camp with her family because her parents refused to swear allegiance to the Fascist government of Japan’s ally, Italy. She retraces those years of cold, hunger, and disease in her new novel, Vita mia.

Dacia Maraini is one of Italy’s most prominent contemporary authors. She has won numerous prizes, including the most prestigious Italian literature awards: the Campiello and the Strega. Her books have been translated into twenty-two languages.
