Please join us for the screening of Crystal Swan (2018) and the following discussion with the film director Darya Zhuk. Set in the 1990s, Crystal Swan is a Belorusian drama centered around Velya, a young woman from Minsk who dreams of moving to Chicago and pursuing her passion for house music. A forged document for her American visa application takes her on a trip to the provinces. The film follows her moving, messy, and painful journey in search for personal freedom against the background of the post-Soviet transition. Crystal Swan is the first movie of the Fall 2022 Harriman Film Series Warning Signs, which looks at the work of post-Soviet female directors on the threshold of the recent protests in Belarus and the present-day invasion of Ukraine. Moderated by Mark Lipovetsky and Tanya Efremova.
