This talk first looks at the strategies Chinese NGOs employ domestically to survive and operate in its current environment. It thereafter poses the query – drawing upon fieldwork evidence from Africa and Southeast Asia – what happens when Chinese NGOs that are born and socialized in such a domestic environment, are now “going out” to other jurisdictions with similar or varying political and economic regime types? Finally, the talk will suggest that the hyper-internationalization of Chinese social organizations will foster an equally hyper-pluralized global civil society that will beg us to rethink our understanding of salient precepts and operations in international affairs. Lecture by Reza Hasmath, Professor at University of Alberta and moderated by Yao Lu, Associate Professor of Sociology.
