The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted two years ago, making it an opportune time for a first stocktaking. The SDGs make the central promise to Leave No One Behind and include a dedicated goal to reduce inequalities. Human rights advocates have put great hopes in the SDGs as an instrument for transformative change. But do they bring about the much-needed paradigm shift? Or were the extensive consultations and negotiations much ado about nothing? At the event, we will launch a special issue of the International Journal of Human Rights on the “Sustainable Development Goals and Human Rights: A Critical Early Review” co-edited by Inga Winkler and Carmel Williams. Speakers will focus on monitoring and policies for the way forward with a focus on invisible and marginalized population groups. • Margaret L. Satterthwaite, NYU Law School • Kate Donald, Center for Economic and Social Rights • Sara L. M. Davis, NYU Center for Human Rights & Global Justice • Mila Rosenthal, United Nations Development Programme & Institute for the Study of Human Rights • Lauren Barredo, Sustainable Development Solutions Network • Chaired by Inga Winkler, Institute for the Study of Human Rights Institute for the Study of Human Rights Co-sponsored by • Columbia Law School Human Rights Institute • SIPA Human Rights and Humanitarian Policy Concentration • Human Rights Graduate Group • Columbia University Students for Human Rights • Center for Economic and Social Rights • Sustainable Development Solutions Network
