LASA is Liga Filipina’s Spring formal event celebrating filipino roots and culture through performance and food. This year’s theme is called (si)mula. Mula is the Tagalog root for origins and beginnings. However in Ilocano, the word takes on a double meaning as crop or plant. Tagalog roots can be conjugated in dozens of ways, and so mula takes on a multitude of lives, each with their own subtleties: (pag)mula: origin; (mag)mula: to come from; (si)mula: the beginning.
This LASA, we return to the roots of Filipino history, imagining the world of our ancestors, a world where nature was alive with spirit and the supernatural. Watching over our people through the millenia are the Balete trees, ancient fig trees that are home to our history and folklore. The oldest living Balete tree, over 1,300 years old, remembers a time before colonization, when native dialects were spoken freely, baybayin was written, and forests flourished with unseen life.
