“Movie Music of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution: Political Control and Artistic Creativity” Zhang Shuo, Lecturer, Department of Music, Beijing Institute of Education Moderated by: Andrew J. Nathan, Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science, Department of Political Science, Columbia University During the Cultural Revolution, music was tightly constrained by political correctness, but Zhang Shuo believes that these very restrictions pushed composers to greater artistic creativity. He will illustrate this argument with clips from narrative movies from that period (not the more commonly studied “model operas”).
