I’m carrying out important research about comparative politics on neo-populism and corruption in Latin America and Europe. Columbia University has helped me with experts on Latin America and Comparative Politics that were very helpful to my research on neo-populism and corruption in Latin America and Europe.
My line of research is about neo-populism in the 21st century. My general objective is to study the resurgence of neo-populism practices (and leaders) in Latin America (ex.: Brazil) and Europe (ex.: Italy). My specific goals are:
o To discuss if neo-populism represents a threat to democracy in Latin America and (southern) Europe;
o To identify the social bases of neo-populism and its leaders;
o To establish the connection between the crisis of, representative democracy, traditional political parties, and neo-populist movement.
o To discuss and propose quantitative and qualitative indicators that could make neo-populism movements comparable across different countries such as Italy and Brazil.
My main hypothesis is:
The neo-populism movement is a crisis of political legitimacy which affects traditional parties and the overall political system.
My main problem is: How to identify and measure a neo-populism movement? What are the main common features of neo-populism in Latin America and Southern Europe?
