Racism & International Organizations Speaker Series

March 21, 2022
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
America/New_York
International Affairs Building, 420 W. 118 St., New York, NY 10027 1512

The United Nations play a key role in promoting anti-racism work across the globe. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed “Racism and racial inequality still permeate institutions, social structures and everyday life.” Sometimes this means that the UN needs to focus on how to address racial discrimination within its own ranks. In December 2021, the Secretary-General’s Task Force on Addressing Racism and Promoting Dignity for All in the UN Secretariat released its first-ever strategic action plan that spells out how to encourage reporting and enhance accountability, monitoring and transparency.

On March 21––the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination––the UN’s Teddy Keya discusses the key recommendations and challenges for reassessing the UN’s structures and institutions to create trust, effectively address racism and support racial diversity, equity and inclusion.

Teddy Keya serves as Senior Programme Management Officer (antiracism) in the UN’s Department of Management, Strategy, Policy and Compliance. He was chiefly involved in coordinating the activities of the Secretary-General’s Task Force on Addressing Racism and Promoting Dignity at the United Nations Secretariat.

The event will be moderated by Professor Eugenia McGill, Co-Director, Economic and Political Development Concentration and co-chair, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Climate & Engagement (DEICE) Committee, SIPA and Professor Daniel Naujoks, director a.i. of SIPA’s International Organization and UN studies specialization.

Mr. Keya is scheduled to attend in person and there will be grab&go food after the event. Columbia students, staff, and faculty can opt to join the in-person event or to join virtually. Due to the pandemic, other guests only have the option to join online. Please see the separate registration options.
