Professor Katherine Franke will present a roundup of federal court decisions focusing on the rights and liberties of those in the United States who identify as LGBTQ. The cases highlighted will include Masterpiece Cake Shop Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, which the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule upon by June 2018, and EEOC v. R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes, a transgender rights case currently on its way to the Supreme Court. As Faculty Advisor with the Public Rights/Private Conscience Project at Columbia Law School, Professor Franke participated in writing amicus briefs in the Masterpiece Cakeshop and Harris cases that were considered by the U.S. Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, respectively. As an aside, a team of SRZ lawyers also filed an amicus brief on behalf of the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case.
