Our Turkey Series continues with the fifth panel bringing together distinguished speakers to discuss the paradigm shift fueled by the latest local elections. On May 6, 2019, Turkish Supreme Election Council's decision on re-run of local elections in Istanbul shook the country to its core. In a country that is collapsing institutionally, what does the future hold for its citizens? Our speakers will critically analyze where this shift may take the country next, both politically and socially. We will then delve into what "rule of law" means now and how it affects the ongoing trials of freedom of expression. Our speakers will expand on academic freedom in the light of Professor Fusun Ustel's imprisonment on Tuesday, May 7th, 2019. Speakers: Chad Kautzer, Chair - Professor of Philosophy, Lehigh University Sarah Clarke, Article 19, Head of Europe and Central Asia Ayse Bingol Demir, Lawyer, Turkey Litigation Support Project Cem Ozatalay, University in Exile Visiting Research Scholar at The New School Giran Ozcan, HDP US Representative Aykan Erdemir, Former CHP MP, Senior Fellow, Foundation for Defense of Democracies Co-Hosts: Research Institute on Turkey Article 19 Columbia Global Freedom of Expression Columbia Institute for the Study of Human Rights Turkey Litigation Support Project Columbia SIPA 420 W 118th Street, New York, NY Room #707
