May 25th 2018 will be an important date for data science. On this day, Europe will start enforcing the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), possibly the most important data regulation in the last 20 years. Among others, companies will no longer be able to use illegible terms and conditions, breach notifications will become mandatory, and data portability will be enforced. The text goes on for another 261 pages, and the suggested fines are hefty.
What is GDPR? What will it change for consumers and data scientists? What are the threats and opportunities for business? To answer those questions, we invited a law professor, V. Abazi (NYU, Maastricht U.) and a data scientist, R. Berjon (the New York Times) to introduce the regulation and discuss how it will impact data science and society. The talks will be followed by a short panel, moderated by prof. Vishal Mishra (Columbia).
Dinner and drinks will be served.
