This three-day workshop teaches the practical skills of fund raising. Covered topics include: a comprehensive overview of charitable giving; various types of fund raising appeals; the elements of a grant proposal; and prospect research resources. Participants will learn to select appropriate fund raising approaches for their work, how to craft a compelling case for financial support, how to write an effective grant proposal and how to research and identify prospective donors. Participants will also receive feedback on a fund raising case statement, a proposal and budget outline, and draft donor list.

Homework: Identify 5 to 10 prospective donors using the resources identified in class. Select one and develop a prospect profile using the template provided by the instructor.
Workshop Facilitator
John W. Hicks, CFRE is Principal of DLBHICKS LLC. With more than thirty years of experience in fundraising, he provides consultation and strategic guidance for annual and capital fundraising programs for US and international nonprofits. Additionally, he counsels clients on building managerial, fundraising, and board capacity. John is a member of the faculty of Columbia University’s Nonprofit Management program and frequently appears as a featured presenter for The Foundation Center and nonprofit conferences in the U.S. and abroad. He is a contributing author to After the Grant (Foundation Center, 2010) and to The Nonprofit Handbook: Fund Raising (Wiley, 2001). A Certified Fund Raising Executive, John is a former member of the Board of Directors of AFP International and is a past President of the AFP New York City Chapter. He holds degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Hartford and has completed professional education courses with the Lake Forest School of Management and Harvard University.

A certificate of participation will be granted to all those who complete both days of training. Individuals who complete three workshops offered as part of the Human Rights Training Series will receive an ISHR Human Rights Training Series certificate of completion.
