Labor Migration and Social Development in Contemporary China Speaker: Rachel Murphy, Professor of Chinese Development and Society, Head of School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, University of Oxford Moderated by: Yao Lu, Associate Professor of Sociology, Columbia University About the Speaker and Event: Rachel Murphy, Professor of Chinese Development and Society and Head of School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, University of Oxford Rachel Murphy is Professor of Chinese Development and Society and Head of School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, University of Oxford. Her research examines transformations in China due to inter-related processes of industrialization, urbanization, demographic transition, and marketization. She has conducted in-depth longitudinal ethnography and surveys across China. Her 2002 monograph offered one of the first analyses of the impact of return migration on rural China. She has also edited several books, such as Chinese Citizenship: Views from the Margins; Media, Identity and Struggle in 21st Century China. She is currently writing a book about the children of rural-urban labor migrants in two rapidly-urbanizing interior provinces, which forms the basis of her talk.
