If you are interested in using R or Python for open API data scraping, please join staff from the Digital Scholarship unit and explore data harvesting and manipulation using the API of Columbia’s institutional repository, Academic Commons. Attendees will receive a brief overview of repositories, learn general strategies for how to leverage open APIs to answer scholarly questions in the first hour, then get an introduction to working with JSON files in R or Python (depending on your personal choice) in the second hour.
This workshop is beginner-friendly; attendees should know how to install and open R/Python before coming to the workshop.
If you prefer to use R in the workshop, please download and install R & RStudio prior to the workshop. If you prefer to use Python in the workshop, we will use Google Colab (so if you have a google account, you are all set!)
There is a parallel session for OpenRefine users in another week (Oct. 17). Even if you are not interested in data manipulation & coding, you are very welcome to join us in either week during 2-3pm and get to know Columbia’s open access academic repository (Academic Commons)!
