The Brazil Research Seminar Series invites you to its discussion titled, “Political Cycles and Brazil’s Deep Crisis” with José Maurício Domingues, Adjunct-Professor, IESP-UERJ. Brazil underwent a deep democratizing process from the 1970s to the 2000s, but this cycle was exhausted and has come to an end. This means that the institution, the agenda and the agents that pushed that process through have only partially been able to answer to the challenges of a new cycle that begins to emerge. The present crisis is very deep because some issues have remained untouched in the former period or developed in a perverted way. However, there is a chance that, despite some regressive measures implemented by the conservative forces in power at this point, the new cycle will unfold also in a democratizing direction, though it will take a while until the country gets back on its feet.
