A talk by Sue Mendelsohn in the Columbia University Heyman Center for the Humanities, 2nd floor common room. Columbia English Department lecturer Sue Mendelsohn uncovers an incendiary moment in the history of African-American education, when one small college's literacy program took the fight for fair hiring to the national stage. Mendelsohn tells the stories of educators who taught literacies of citizenship in the Jim Crow South during World War II and the backlash they faced from both the South and the North. The event is open to the Columbia community and members of the public.
