One troubling side effect of the highly polarized news ecosystem on social media is that people are not familiar with many of the most prolific news sources that "the other side" reads. Even those who try to escape their echo chambers may be leery of "liking" a page from the political bizarro world. Looking at how opposing voices are covering the news is really important but it can also be confusing, scary, and sometimes overwhelming. To help solve this problem, the Tow Center for Digital Journalism is building a tool to help people understand the sources of the articles they encounter on social media. How large an audience does this publisher have? Who owns and operates the site? Is this from a real operation with real people behind it? Help us build out this new source-checking project: You can contribute ideas, write code, do research, add sources, write documentation, find public signals to include, or analyse/visualize our existing data. Space is limited to 30 people.
